MISSIONS
2008: Brazil
Rio de Janeiro/Fortaleza
Saturday, March 8th - Sunday, March 16th
This
mission is designed to bring medical/dental care to
the impoverished near Fortaleza, Brazil. Fortaleza.
Working with local medical authorities and FUNDAMED,
a non-profit foundation founded in 1997, our focus will
be general medical/dental care for those living in abject
poverty. Three days of medical/dental clinic are planned
(Mon - Wed). Physicians, Dentists, PAs, NPs, RNs, Pharmacists,
Chiropractor and support personnel needed Surgeons are
welcome as the hospital has invited FDoA to consider
helping surgeries now and in future missions.
In March this region of Brazil is known for sun and
fun at the beaches (82-90 degrees). There are great
needs among the poor in Brazil. Near Fortaleza there
are thousands of impoverished people who need medical/dental
care. Few people know that Brazil has the greatest disparity
of wealth in South America. The inequality between rich
and poor is increasing "rapidly and dramatically.
It has been reported that in Brazil the wealthiest 1/5
of the population takes home more than 50% of the income;
while the poorest 1/5 accounts for less than 4%.
Our
base of operations is outside of Fortaleza in the small
fishing village of Praia do Presidio. From Praia we
will trave to three different community and work in
local clinic in cooperation with the local medical society
of Fortaleza.
At the end of the mission our team will have the weekend
to experience Rio de Janeiro. In Rio we will be staying
on the Copacabana beach.
